Long-term impact of divorce on women’s earnings across multiple divorce windows: A life course perspective

چکیده
We investigate divorce as a turning point for women’s earnings trajectories and whether those patterns have changed over recent decades. We use a unique data set that links retrospective family history data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation to longitudinal earnings records from the Social Security Administration. Using a panel fixedeffects model, we retrospectively compare women experiencing a marital dissolution across three divorce windows within a 25-year period (1970–1994) to continuously married women, from 3 years before to 10 years following separation. We find that women who divorced experienced long-lasting earnings increases, particularly among those who did not remarry. The increases in earnings levels are comparatively similar for those divorced at different times; however, percentage increases are significantly smaller for women experiencing divorce in more recent (1990–1994) relative to earlier (1970– 1974) years. We also document lasting employment gains and higher earnings among employed women arising from divorce. In combination, the results extend our understanding of divorce as a salient turning point in women’s work lives and call attention to possible changes in this process over recent decades. Two quasi-experiments are used to estimate the impact of parental divorce on the adult incomes and labour market behaviour of children, as well as on their use of social programs, and their marital/fertility behaviour. متن کاملThe Effect of Marital Breakup on the Income Distribution of Women with Children
Having a female firstborn child significantly increases the probability that a woman’s first marriage breaks up. Recent work has exploited this exogenous variation to measure the effect of marital breakup on economic outcomes, and has concluded that divorce has little effect on women’s average household income. Employing an Abadie (2003) technique that allows us to look at the impact of marital...

Divorce, Abortion and Children’s Sex Ratio: The Impact of Divorce Reform in China This paper explores how the relative circumstances of men and women following marital dissolution affect sex-selection behavior within marriages. China’s 2001 divorce reform liberalized divorce in favor of women and secured women’s property rights after separation. We use this improvement in women’s bargaining pow...

We used data from the study of Marital Instability Over the Life Course to examine links between divorce in the grandparent generation and outcomes in the grandchild generation (N = 691). Divorce in the first generation (G1) was associated with lower education, more marital discord, weaker ties with mothers, and weaker ties with fathers in the third generation (G3). These associations were medi...
متن کاملDoes Divorce Risk in Sweden depend on Spouses' Relative Income? A Study of Marriages from 1981 to 1998
The relationship between increasing women’s earnings and rising divorce rates frequently has been explained by the so-called independence effect: If a wife enjoys a higher earning than her husband does, she gains less from marriage. It has also been argued that in a society with egalitarian gender attitudes this effect is less important. In this paper, we test if the independence effect applies...
